Ballengeich Cemetery
Ballengeich Cemetery was opened in 1888 to relieve pressure on the older Valley Cemetery and Mar’s Wark Garden. There are excellent views of Stirling Castle which lies close by to the west. There is also access to the walks on the Gowane Hills. Ballengeich is the old name for the small valley between the cemetery and the castle. As in other cemeteries, an area was set aside for the burials of people who did not pay for a family burial lair; this is at the lower end, nearest the town and there is a plaque commemorating those unmarked burials.
All the graves lie beside a path so there was easy access. But the ‘gardenesque’ aspect is represented only by a rocky, shrub-covered knoll at the top end.
