Roller Skating Craze Disappears in Scotland
Across the whole of Scotland in 1911, the collapse of roller-skating was happening. All notices published in the Scotsman 1911.
9th January 1911, article, the Edinburgh Marine Gardens Ltd company report to shareholders quoted that roller skating profit was down by £1500 over last year, this of course was to be expected as in common with other rinks there was a marked falling off in the number of visitors to the gardens rink.
13th February 1911, advert, Motherwell roller skating rink, Hamilton Road, Motherwell, together with fixtures and fittings for sale by public roup.
29th March 1911, advert, Dundee skating rink at Melrose Terrace for sale or let, nearly 20,000 square feet of skating floor completely furnished with skates etc.
13th July, 1911, article, Perth Skating Rink Company filed for voluntary liquidation due to insufficient capital and the decline in popularity of roller skating in Perth.
4th October 1911, advert, The Olympia Palace in Edinburgh advertised roller skating only 2 days a week, Wednesday and Saturday and only 2 sessions a day, 2-5pm, 7-10pm, Olympia Palace in Edinburgh eventually closed and after a few temporary changes in use was converted to a cinema. (6th Feb 1912 Scotsman)
8th November, 1911, advert for a roller skating rink for sale Forbesfield Road skating rink, Aberdeen with right to dismantle and remove. Cost when built in 1909 between £4000 and £5000.
So before 1911 was out, roller skating within indoor rinks was at an end throughout Scotland.
It had started in such a frenzy in 1909 but proved to be very short lived. Cinematograph which replaced it proved to be more enduring.
