From the earliest records until into the twentieth century, Stirling was a port with a harbour on the Forth at the modern Shore Road. The importance of the harbour is sometimes exaggerated. Even in the fifteenth century it was not a busy place and, during the seventeenth century, customs collection was moved to Bo'ness, where the bigger ships docked in deeper water. Alloa, too, was of growing importance, whilst only small ships could come up the shallow, winding Forth. The railway came as a final blow and, since 1848, few ships have docked in Stirling.
We have had an enquiry from a researcher looking at its history - perhaps mainly its more recent history. Do you recall any ships using it? Was it a place you used to visit for picnics - or just to watch the world go by? Has it been important in your life - or did your grandparents tell tales about it?
