Talk about the Livingstones of Callendar House on 28th September

This talk will be held on Monday 28th September 2015 at 7.30pm in the Smith Museum and Art Gallery in Stirling.
It is by Ian Scott, well-known local historian. The Livingstones were one of the dominant families in the Falkirk (and, indeed, in the Stirling) area for centuries.
It is organised by the Friends of the Smith, tickets at the door £5/£4

Scottish Vernacular Buildings Group - meeting in Stirling on 3rd October

The Scottish Vernacular Buildings Group are holding their Annual Conference and AGM in Stirling in Cowane's Hospital, St John Street, Stirling (it's right beside the Kirk of the Holy Rude) on Saturday 3rd October.

There are several items of local interest including:

Chris McGregor, Historic Environment Scotland ‘The Engine Shed Project, Stirling’

Gill Stewart, Stirling City Heritage Trust ‘The Traditional Buildings Health Check Scheme – the Pilot and Stirling’s materials’

John Harrison, Historian ‘Building Materials of Early-Modern Stirling'

Further details are on the attached flyers. Although the day kicks off with the AGM, non-members are welcome to attend the rest of the day. There are still a few places left, though prior booking is essential. Get all the details including the booking form and contact details via this link .

New Online Resource from Forth Naturalist and Historian

The Forth Naturalist and Historian has now been the leading source for local information on local history, wildlife and many other topics for many years. For some years, now, many of the journals (back to 1976) have been available online.
To complete this updating process, most of the rest (except for the last two or three years) have now been scanned and put online along with two 'one-off' publications:
The Stirling Region, edited by Timms (1974)
Central Scotland; Land, Wildlife, People (1993)

University of Stirling Archives & Special Collections invite you to an event celebrating the donation of the papers of Peter Mackay to the university.

‘We Have Tomorrow’: Peter Mackay and the Liberation Movement in Southern Africa
University of Stirling Library
5.30pm, Tuesday 22nd September 2015

Peter Mackay (1926-2013) was a key figure in the independence movements of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Nyasaland (Malawi). Born into a Scottish family with strong links to Doune, Mackay served in the Scots Guards before emigrating to Southern Rhodesia in 1948, where devoted himself to the cause of African liberation. Following the establishment of majority rule in Zimbabwe, he took up the cause of the impoverished people of Omay on the shores of Lake Kariba. His volume of memoirs, We Have Tomorrow: Stirrings in Africa, 1959-1967 provides remarkable insights into Southern African nationalism in its most principled phase.
The event will begin with a public lecture by Dr John McCracken (author of A History of Malawi) on ‘Peter Mackay and the role of White Activists in the Nationalist Struggle in Malawi and Zimbabwe.’ The lecture will be followed by an opportunity to view a selection of material from the Peter Mackay Archive in our archives reading room.
