Stirling Council Archives Open Day on 16 Nov

31/10/2013

Stirling Council Archives holds many riches - the greatest source for our local history and invaluable, too, for family history and other local studies.

They are holding a FREE open day, 10am to 4pm on 16th Nov. and all are welcome, to find out more about the resources which Archives offer and how they may be able to help YOU.

Archivists will be on hand to answer your questions and to suggest how you might be able to crack that tricky problem!

Stirling Council Archives can be found at 5 Borrowmeadow Road, Stirling (on the Springkerse Industrial Estate).

You can download the flyer with links to further information

ScottishTen - Friends of the Smith lecture on 28 Oct at 7.30pm

20/10/2013

The 'Scottish Ten' project is a stunning, international project. David Mitchell, local resident and Director of Conservation at Historic Scotland will be talking about it on 28th Oct at 7.30pm in the Smith.

You can download the poster with full details of this event, hosted by Friends of the Smith, by clicking here..

Season 2013-4 starting on 31 Oct

8/10/2013

As usual, the new season starts on the last Thursday of October and, also as usual, we have lined up an interesting programme.

Though Cambusbarron is so close to Stirling it certainly remains a distinct community with its own identity - and its own history. Peter Paterson has studied Cambusbarron for many years and has published a number of booklets and other items. So, his talk (which will be very copiously illustrated) should be fascinating.

All meetings are on the last Thursday of the month, monthly from October to April but with no meeting in December. Meetings are in the Smith Museum and Art Gallery in Stirling. You can join at this first meeting (£10 for the season); visitors are always welcome but we do ask for a small contribution. Students and people under 18 FREE. You can see the details of the rest of the season on the home page of this site.

This is a 'general interest' group. You do not need to have any great knowledge of the history of Stirling to find it interesting and even useful.

Heritage Forum in Stirling on 19 Oct

8/10/2013

For the last couple of years, Forth Naturalist and Historian have organised Wildlife Forums, bringing together a wide range of local groups working on the natural environment.

This year there is to be a Heritage Forum, bringing together groups interested in history, archaeology and other related issues. A wide attendance from groups across Central Scotland (Stirling, Clacks and Falkirk areas) is promised. Each group will have a stall. It is a chance to find out what others are doing and to see what is on offer. The event will be at the Smith Museum, Dumbarton Rd, Stirling and the doors open at 10am.

Stirling Local History Society will be there. We will have the website running 'live', the Stirling graveyards and gravestones booklet will be available, a chance to join or to find out more. And we are looking forward to meeting members of other groups and societies.

The event is FREE and you can just turn up - though please do not bring a stall unless you have made arrangements in advance! Find out what is going on which group most appeals to you or investigate if your group could benefit by working with others.

Old Stirling on Facebook

2/10/2013

Facebook users may already know of the site at https://www.facebook.com/groups/oldstirling/?fref=ts but others might also like to take a look.

There are a lot of photos of the town and the area with some comment by people who recall the scenes and the people.

Do remember, if you have unusual old photos, that Stirling Council Archives and the Smith Museum both have substantial collections of photos of the area's past and might be interested in having copies to ensure that they are preserved for the long term.

Do contact is if you need further information.
