Cyclists' Touring Club and 5 King St, Stirling

We have had an enquiry and wonder if anyone can help.

When I moved to Stirling in the early eighties, there was an hotel in operation at No.5 King Street. I had a meal there once, but I cannot recall what the hotel was called, and I wondered if someone in the Society could provide the name?

The reason I ask is that some hotels and inns used to have the cast metal 'winged wheel' emblem of the Cyclists Touring Club attached to their walls if they were 'CTC approved' establishments. No.5 King Street has one of these emblems.

Oddly, in photographs taken just a few years ago, it appears that the emblem is missing. However, when I zoom into the photos, it looks like the emblem might have been in situ, but painted over:

If so, someone, in fairly recent times, has gone to the trouble of restoring it.

There is a website which lists the remaining emblems around the UK. The listing for Stirling wrongly states that the emblem is on the 'Kingsbury Hotel', and gives its location (on a Google map) at the top of King Street. I can't find any reference to a Kingsbury Hotel in Stirling on the internet. I'd like to inform the emblem website owner of the correct location and be able to tell him the name of the defunct hotel.

I now gather that the plaque was always in place but had been painted over. During the course of fairly recent restoration work on the facades of this area by the Stirling City Heritage Trust (funded by Scottish Government but with local support and management) the plague was repainted to its present glory!

Thanks for the information. Since posting this query I've been able to quiz a few long time residents of Stirling. The consensus of opinion is that the building was once The Kings Gate Hotel.

The last owners of the Kingsgate Hotel are still I am sure alive and living in Grendon Gardens off Snowdon Place,they are Mr & Mrs

Thanks, Stuart, but no need for contact details. It was only the hotel's name that I wanted to dig up and, from your post, I realise I had wrongly written the Kings Gate, when in fact it was the Kingsgate The website which lists the remaining CTC Winged Wheel emblems has now been updated with the information kindly supplied from this blog.

I have seen the the spelling of the hotels name both ways but correct way is Kings Gate as you correctly had it.Prior to being the Kings Gate it was known as Gill's Temperance Hotel.

I recall seeing photos of the street corner -where the coffee place now is. It used to be known as Hugh Gavin's Corner as there was a shop (clothes, drapery?) there in the earlier decades of the 20th century. But I can't find a photo amongst the ones I have.
Any photo is very likely to include signs of the building frontages?
